If you're considering adding some charm to your home with antique doors, I can’t recommend it enough. These doors can bring character and history to your space, and make a new home feel lived in. Although beautiful, they come with a few unique challenges.

Here are three tips to keep in mind:

1. Purchase Before You Frame

Antique doors are often unique in shape and size, so it’s helpful to buy them before you start framing. Unlike standard modern doors, these vintage pieces might not fit into the typical door frame dimensions. By purchasing your doors early, you can ensure they fit perfectly, avoiding any last-minute adjustments that could delay your project.

2. Confirm Sizing with Your Team

Even with new builds, there can be height and width restrictions that you’ll need to consider. Before you fall in love with a particular door, double-check with your interior designer, architect, or builder to ensure it meets all the necessary requirements. This step is crucial to avoid any surprises down the road, like discovering your dream door is too tall or heavy for your space. I can speak from experience, because I have a spot for these doors that would be so dreamy, but I’m limited on space so I may have to just find a new dream LOL.

3. Start Sourcing Early

Finding the perfect antique door can take time, especially if you’re working within specific limitations - as I mentioned above, I’ve been looking for (what feels like) forever, and I’ve had no luck. Start your search early to give yourself plenty of time to find the right piece. This way, you won’t feel rushed, and you’ll have more options to choose from. Plus, sourcing early gives you a better chance of finding a door that not only fits your space but also matches your vision.

Incorporating vintage or antique doors into your home is totally worth it, but it requires a bit of extra planning. By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to creating a space that’s both beautiful and unique. Happy door hunting!
