Choosing plumbing fixtures is one of the most exciting (and sometimes daunting) parts of building a custom home - it's all in the details, and that includes everything for a drain to a faucet. A plumbing fixture is anything that delivers and drains water throughout the home, including sinks, faucets, and toilets. Here’s a little guide to help navigate these choices and create a home that's both functional and beautiful.

Exploring Different Types of Sinks

Sinks are more than just functional necessities; they can be statement pieces that enhance the style of our kitchen and bathrooms.

Types of SInks

Here are some of the more common sinks types, some of which we considered:

  1. Undermount Sink: These are the most common type of sink. They are installed beneath a countertop, creating a seamless look. They’re easy to clean since there are no edges where food or dirt can get trapped. Perfect for a sleek and modern kitchen design.

  2. Top-Mount Sink: Also known as drop-in sinks, these are installed from above the countertop. While they might not offer the sleek appearance of under-mount sinks, they are easier to install and replace.

  3. Apron Sink: With a deep basin and exposed front, farmhouse sinks add character to the kitchen. They are great for handling large pots and pans and have a timeless appeal.

  4. Vessel Sinks: These sit on top of the counter and are often found in bathrooms. They come in various shapes and materials, and are often a focal point in the space.

  5. Integrated Sink: These sinks are built using the same material as the countertop offering a seamless and clean look. They are easy to clean and perfect for modern and minimalist designs.

  6. Wall Mounted Sink: These sinks are attached directly to the wall, freeing up floor space, however something reducing storage space. They are often ideal for small bathrooms.

  7. Workstation Sink: These are a versatile kitchen addition that integrates accessories like cutting boards and drying racks, streamlining food prep and cleanup while saving space. It enhances functionality and organization, which is right up my alley!
Diving into Different Types of Faucets

Faucets are the perfect example of function and beauty fusing together - there are so many beautiful faucets available!

There are many different types of faucets, however here is a breakdown of some of the most common faucets for kitchens and bathrooms.

Kitchen Faucets:
  1. Wall-Mounted Faucets: These are attached to the wall above the sink, ideal for minimalist designs and freeing up counter space. They add a modern touch and can be a striking visual feature.

  2. Deck-Mounted Faucets: Installed on the sink or countertop, these are the most common type. They come in various styles and configurations, such as single-handle or double-handle, allowing flexibility in design and use.

  3. Pot Filler: Mounted near the stove, pot fillers can swing out to fill pots directly on the cooktop. They are a practical addition for those who love cooking, making it easy to fill large pots without carrying them from the sink.

  4. Bridge Faucet: Featuring a classic, vintage look, these faucets have a separate hot and cold handle that meet in the middle before reaching the spout. They add a charming, traditional touch to the kitchen.

  5. Pull Down Faucet: These come with a spray head that pulls out of the spout, making it easy to reach every corner of the sink. They offer flexibility and convenience, especially for tasks like washing vegetables or rinsing the sink.

  6. Smart Faucet: These innovative faucets come with touchless technology or voice control, allowing for hands-free operation and precise water temperature adjustments. They add a modern touch and improve convenience.
Bathroom Faucets:
  1. Single-Hole Faucets: Requiring only one hole for installation, these faucets typically feature a single handle for temperature and flow control. They offer a clean and streamlined look.

  2. Three-Hole Faucets: These require three holes for installation—one for the spout and two for the handles. They offer a classic look and greater control over water temperature.

  3. Wall-Mounted Faucets: These are also popular in bathrooms, providing a sleek, modern look and freeing up counter space.

With many faucets you have the option to customize the finish and the handles. Here is a breakdown of the most common handle options.

Handle Options:
  1. Lever Handles: Available in various styles and provide a modern look.
  2. Blade Handles: Sleek and simple, often used for a minimalist aesthetic.
  3. Cross Handles: Classic and elegant, adding a traditional touch
  4. Wheel Handles: Unique and industrial, offering a distinct look.

Toilets: Let’s Get to the Bottom of It

Toilets are an essential part of any home, and choosing the right one can make a big difference in comfort and efficiency. Here are some options we explored:

  1. Two-Piece Toilets: The tank and bowl are separate, making them easier to move and install. They are the most common type found in homes.

  2. One-Piece Toilets: The tank and bowl are fused into a single unit, offering a sleek look and easier cleaning. They often have a more modern design.

  3. Wall-Hung Toilets: Mounted on the wall with the tank hidden inside, these save floor space and make cleaning the bathroom floor easier. They add a contemporary touch to the bathroom.

  4. Dual-Flush Toilets: Offering two flush options—a lower-volume flush for liquid waste and a higher-volume flush for solid waste—these toilets conserve water and reduce utility bills. They are an eco-friendly choice that doesn’t compromise on performance.
Skirted vs. Non-Skirted Toilets:
  • Skirted Toilets: These have a smooth, sleek base that hides the shape of the piping. They are much easier to clean and provide a modern look.
  • Non-Skirted Toilets: These show the outline of the piping, which can be harder to clean but may be preferred for a more traditional appearance.

Making the Right Choices for Our Home

When it comes to choosing plumbing fixtures, we focused on several key factors:

Consistency in Design: We wanted fixtures that complement each other and match the style of our home. For our home we went for more traditional fixtures.

Quality and Durability: Investing in high-quality fixtures ensures they will last and withstand daily use, saving us from frequent replacements.

Water Efficiency: We looked for fixtures with WaterSense certification to ensure they use water efficiently without compromising performance.

Although my head was left spinning after my last sourcing appointment, I do enjoy shopping for these fixtures. Once we finalize our order, I'll share what I decided on for our new home.
