Choosing the Perfect Plumbing Fixtures

Choosing plumbing fixtures is one of the most exciting (and sometimes daunting) parts of building a custom home - it's all in the details, and that includes everything for a drain to a faucet. A plumbing fixture is anything that delivers and drains water throughout the home, including sinks, faucets, and toilets. Here’s a little guide to help navigate these choices and create a home that's both functional and beautiful.

Exploring Different Types of Sinks

Sinks are more than just functional necessities; they can be statement pieces that enhance the style of our kitchen and bathrooms.

Here are some of the more common sinks types, some of which we considered:

1. Undermount Sink: These are the most common type of sink. They are installed beneath a countertop, creating a seamless look. They’re easy to clean since there are no edges where food or dirt can get trapped. Perfect for a sleek and modern kitchen design.
   
   
2. Top-Mount Sink: Also known as drop-in sinks, these are installed from above the countertop. While they might not offer the sleek appearance of under-mount sinks, they are easier to install and replace.
   
   
3. Apron Sink: With a deep basin and exposed front, farmhouse sinks add character to the kitchen. They are great for handling large pots and pans and have a timeless appeal.
   
   
4. Vessel Sinks: These sit on top of the counter and are often found in bathrooms. They come in various shapes and materials, and are often a focal point in the space.

With many faucets you have the option to customize the finish and the handles. Here is a breakdown of the most common handle options.

Toilets: Let’s Get to the Bottom of It

Toilets are an essential part of any home, and choosing the right one can make a big difference in comfort and efficiency. Here are some options we explored:

1. Two-Piece Toilets: The tank and bowl are separate, making them easier to move and install. They are the most common type found in homes.
   
   
2. One-Piece Toilets: The tank and bowl are fused into a single unit, offering a sleek look and easier cleaning. They often have a more modern design.
   
   
3. Wall-Hung Toilets: Mounted on the wall with the tank hidden inside, these save floor space and make cleaning the bathroom floor easier. They add a contemporary touch to the bathroom.
   
   
4. Dual-Flush Toilets: Offering two flush options—a lower-volume flush for liquid waste and a higher-volume flush for solid waste—these toilets conserve water and reduce utility bills. They are an eco-friendly choice that doesn’t compromise on performance.

Skirted vs. Non-Skirted Toilets:

• Skirted Toilets: These have a smooth, sleek base that hides the shape of the piping. They are much easier to clean and provide a modern look.
• Non-Skirted Toilets: These show the outline of the piping, which can be harder to clean but may be preferred for a more traditional appearance.

Making the Right Choices for Our Home

When it comes to choosing plumbing fixtures, we focused on several key factors:

Consistency in Design: We wanted fixtures that complement each other and match the style of our home. For our home we went for more traditional fixtures.

Quality and Durability: Investing in high-quality fixtures ensures they will last and withstand daily use, saving us from frequent replacements.

Water Efficiency: We looked for fixtures with WaterSense certification to ensure they use water efficiently without compromising performance.

Although my head was left spinning after my last sourcing appointment, I do enjoy shopping for these fixtures. Once we finalize our order, I'll share what I decided on for our new home.
